Step-by-Step Guide

How to Install Your PatioSun Kit

No electrician needed. No special tools. Just follow these six steps and you'll be generating clean energy in under an hour.

Before You Start

You don't need any specialist tools. A Phillips screwdriver and an adjustable spanner are all that's required. A second pair of hands is helpful for lifting panels.

1

Unbox & Check Your Kit

  • 2 × Solar panels (size depends on your kit)
  • 1 × Hoymiles HiFlow 800W microinverter
  • Universal mounting brackets (ground, pergola/shed, balcony)
  • MC4 cables and connectors
  • UK 3-pin plug cable
  • Quick-start guide
Tip: Lay everything out and check nothing is damaged before you start.
2

Choose Your Spot

  • Face panels south for maximum sunlight
  • Avoid shade from trees, fences, or buildings
  • You need approx. 2.4m width for two panels side by side
  • Allow 1m ground depth for the frame (projects 1.9m high at angle)
  • Ensure the spot is within cable reach of an outdoor plug socket
Tip: Morning sun is great, but consistent midday and afternoon sun gives the best output.
3

Assemble the Frame

  • Bolt the mounting brackets together using the included hardware
  • Adjust the tilt angle — 30–35° is ideal for the UK
  • Secure the frame to the ground, pergola roof, or balcony rail
  • Make sure the frame is stable and level before mounting panels
Tip: On soft ground, use the included ground stakes. On hard surfaces, the weighted base keeps things steady.
4

Mount the Panels

  • Slide each panel onto the frame rails
  • Secure with the panel clamps (mid-clamps between panels, end-clamps on the outside)
  • Tighten all bolts firmly — panels should not move or rattle
Tip: Have a second person help lift the panels into place. They're not heavy, but they are large.
5

Connect the Microinverter

  • Attach the MC4 cables from each panel to the Hoymiles HiFlow microinverter
  • The connectors click into place — you'll hear and feel them lock
  • Connect the UK 3-pin output cable to the inverter
  • Mount the inverter underneath the panels or on the frame (keep it shaded and ventilated)
Tip: MC4 connectors are weatherproof. Make sure they click fully — a loose connection reduces output.
6

Plug In & Start Generating

  • Plug the 3-pin cable into any standard UK outdoor socket
  • The inverter LED will turn solid green within 60 seconds — you're live
  • Download the Hoymiles S-Miles app to monitor output in real time
  • That's it — you're generating clean energy and saving money
Tip: As of 15 April 2026 (BS7671 Amendment 4), you must submit a G98 Connect & Notify to your local DNO within 28 days of installation. This is a legal requirement for all patio and garden solar systems.
